From clueless to Doula

“But why am I bleeding?”

I remember sitting there, already on edge, already scared… asking a question that felt really big in that moment.

The midwife in the early pregnancy unit looked at me, shrugged, and said
“some women just bleed.”

Then closed the door.

I was six weeks pregnant.

I went home and unravelled.

Crying constantly.
Being sick all the time.
Googling everything and trusting none of it.

Every twinge felt like something was wrong.
Every trip to the bathroom came with a drop in my stomach.

I didn’t know what was happening.
I didn’t know who to trust.
I definitely didn’t trust my own body.

I felt completely on my own in it.

Weeks later, at nine weeks pregnant, I finally got answers.

The reason I’d been bleeding…
had been written in my notes the whole time.

They’d known.

They just hadn’t told me.

Even when I asked.

That was the moment something shifted.

Because it wasn’t just fear anymore.

It was the realisation that if I didn’t understand what was happening,
if I didn’t know how to ask the right questions or speak up…

this pregnancy — and my birth — could very easily feel the same.

Out of my hands.
Confusing.
Something I’d have to make sense of afterwards.

Absolutely not.

What is Hypnobirthing and does Hypnobirthing work?

Hypnobirthing is science and psychology, there’s nothing ‘woo-woo’ about it.

That’s when we found hypnobirthing and everything changed.

Not in a fluffy, “positive vibes” way.
In a real, grounded…
oh, this actually makes sense kind of way.

I started to understand what my body was doing.
What my options actually were.
How to respond when things were suggested, not just go along with it.

For the first time, I felt steady.

I went from dreading labour…
to genuinely looking forward to it.

Not because I thought it would be easy.
But because I understood it.
I trusted myself in it.

My husband knew exactly how to support me.

My son’s birth was the best experience of my life.

Not because everything went perfectly.
But because I knew what was happening.
I felt part of it. I felt supported in it.

Before we’d even left the delivery room, I turned to my husband and said,
“I can’t wait to do that again.”

And I meant it.

Two years later, during my daughter’s pregnancy, that was tested again.

Different decisions.
Different conversations.
More moments where I had to stay steady and really back myself.

And that’s when it became even clearer.

Women don’t just need information.

They need support.

The kind that keeps you grounded when things feel intense.
That helps you understand what’s actually happening while it’s happening.
That means you don’t come out of your birth with preventable trauma.

That’s what led me here.

Birth With Choice was built when I was five months postpartum.

Since then, I’ve supported hundreds of families across three continents,
through hypnobirthing, antenatal preparation and doula support.

But the heart of it is always the same.

Helping you feel steady, informed,
and like you’re part of your birth, not just in it.

Because this isn’t about a perfect birth.

It’s about holding your baby afterwards and knowing what happened.
Feeling proud of how you moved through it.

And not carrying something you need to heal from.
